James Buckley
“He was great to work with. I didn’t think about Ron Weasley at all. Which is the way it should be [...] But they actually just glued us together. It was really painful. And I’m a bit hairier than Rupert and it was hurting me so much. I hated it so much. And it was raining. So we were glued together in the rain.” The glue took days to come off, sticking Buckley to his sheets at night. Buckley called Grint to ask him how he was coping. Grint responded with his own Harry Potter-like cure. “Rupert told me he was using the little vodka miniatures in the hotel bar. He said it was really helping to get the glue off.”
(m.usatoday.com, January 2013)

“I keep forgetting that he’s a mega, mega star [...] It’s so easy to just forget that. Cause you just talk to him and he’s just so nice and so fun to be around, like you go for a beer with him afterwards and stuff and he’s just again, he’s just a bloke. And then you forget that his films have just smashed every record that exists and that everyone on the planet knows who he is. It was really lucky, it was so great that everyone was on the same page and wanted the same thing.”
collider.com, January 2013

Jessie Cave
“He was very easygoing and very laid-back. He didn’t at all have any kind of ego, he was just a nice guy and very normal. It was easy to become friends with him, which I didn’t expect to be honest. I’ve watched [the ‘Harry Potter’ stars] since I was young and, you know, I didn’t think they’d be as normal as they are. It’s quite weird.”
(Latimesblogs June 2009)

“I did really fancy him! In a girly, innocent kind of way – not a weird way at all. I didn’t want to scare him and I’d never tell him. I think that really helped the energy. That’s what David Yates [the director] said to me. We kept making each other laugh, we just clicked.”
(Westside Magazine July 2009)

“He’s such a lovely guy, he’s so normal and grounded, and is just going to work forever as an actor, and I think that’s really admirable, because in a world where he’s so different, he’s his true self. He’s funny, and really lovely, and genuinely down-to-earth.”
(snitchseeker.com, November 2011)

Cheetah Chrome
“The first day I saw him on-set, he hit it dead-on. He had me down. I’m really glad he’s doing me.”
(Rolling Stone Magazine, 18 September 2012)

Robbie Coltrane

”Rupert, I would say, is the most natural performer. He has the most beautiful comedy timing I think I’ve seen in a child.”
(Calgary Sun, 13 November 2001)

Bruce Cook
“It was really fun working with Rupert because if him and me had nothing to do, we would tell each other jokes and amuse each other. It was really fun. We were sort of like brothers.”

“It was so funny because his eyes just got bigger and bigger – I thought they were going to pop out!” (about Rupert forgetting his lines once)
(Thunderpants UK DVD)

Brendan Coyle
“I’ve seen a lot of debuts but none as accomplished as that.” But the whole company was “quite extraordinary”.
(London Evening Standard, 14 November 2013)

Tom Felton
“Rupert is rather shy.”
(HBP Press Q&A Nagoya, Japan, August, 2009)

“You know, no-one could have done the jobs as good as Daniel, or especially Rupert, you know, comedic genius, but yeah!” he said. “No doubt things would have been very different. I’m not sure I would have rocked the ginger hair as well as I did the blond.
(digitalspy.co.uk June 2011)

“Very much so! He’s a dashing gentleman, have you not seen him? He’s very buff! He’s solid, man!” (about how he fancies Rupert)
“Rupert is a unique soul. He’s a very funny guy. But without realising it, actually! I swear most of his comedy comes by accident. But he’s very good at it! And he’s incredibly infectious. People laugh around me all day and I don’t get suckered into it. But when he laughs … that’s it! It’s game over for me. I feel something inside of me turn and I’m like, ‘Oh, no!’”
(todayonline July 2011)

Richard Harris
“Chris Columbus had asked me to come out to the studio to meet the young cast, and I came out to read with them. When I finished the reading, the little boy playing Ron Weasley turned to me and said, ‘Mr. Harris, that was quite a good reading, I think you’ll be quite good in this part!’ It’s that kind of magic that is everywhere in this film.” (Harry Potter Page to Screen)

Stig Henrik Hoff

“He’s and all-around gentleman. Charming, funny and a f****** good actor!
Always bloody well prepared, the script just spurts right out of him. Had he been a sour movie star with diva-like qualities it would have been absolutely awful, but he certainly wasn’t anything like that.”

“Rupert always keeps calm and takes his time with the fans.”
(www.vg.no, November 2011)

“All the actors in Into The White have strong personalities, and are very good actors!
We had a great time shooting, a lot of fun and laughs, and Rupert impressed me!
Young guy, dead on, always dead on, well prepared and funny, generous, without any moviestar-shit, such a likeable person.”

“For me it was crazy to see how much Rupert means for the young ones around the world…
Never experienced fans like that!! 300 persons or more outside the hotel…Wow!!
Very happy that I could walk around in Sweden without anyone noticing…
Again Rupert is very friendly and takes time to talk to a lot of them, taking pictures … etc.
Impressive!!”

“To work with Rupert have been a pleasure! … It’s all about energy! … Rupert got energy! … Luckily!!”
(Exclusive Interview ICM, January 2012)

“He’s an amazing guy! First of all, he’s a great actor, so bloody prepared. And he knows how to film. Moreover, he’s talented, funny and has a great energy. He was fucking great, just a pleasure to act opposite.”

“When the camera turned off, we sat together. It wasn’t as if he sat in a trailer on his own like a big film star. There was no difference between us, we ate the same food.”
(dagbladet.no, March 2012)

“It was fantastic to work with him. He’s an actor, and he’s bloody good and very experienced. He’s a very good man to work with. Of course we’ve become friends, we worked closely together for months. It’s incredibly cool that all the actors are here today…He’s a miserable skier, but a bloody good actor and an amazing person. It’s a right pleasure to work with a world famous star.”
(kjendis.no, March 2012)

Celia Imrie
“They were both absolutely enchanting. I think it’s nonsense when people say not to work with children. You learn some of your best bits from them.”
(Thunderpants UK DVD)

Kat Kirk
“He is just absolutely fantastic to work with, and such an inspiration.”
(London Student, 15 September 2008)

“Rupert is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever met in my life.”

“From Rupert, I’ve learned just to be cool, to be yourself. That boy is so level-headed, and I think it would be so difficult for anyone else in his situation to stay true to who you really are.”
(ICM Exclusive Interview 2009)

David Kross:
“It was difficult to understand. Lots of times there were these moments when he spoke his line and then there was silence: “What did he say?” (laughing) But I guess it was difficult to understand, because he did such a great job. So extreme.”
(about Rupert’s accent, ICM exclusive interview, February 2012)

“Rupert is a very professional and good actor. It was amazing to see, how he is just there the moment the camera switches on. He is in his role immediately, but also has a lot of fun between the scenes, laughs much. He doesn’t take things too seriously, but in front of the camera, bang, he is there. That was impressive. He has a great sense of humour, a likeable guy. A real professional, well he does the job now for a long time, but I think it is cool that he took part in this movie. I guess he is doing a good mix, not just doing the blockbusters, but also little productions.”
(ICM exclusive interview, February 2012)

Matthew Lewis:
“Megan: while we are on the subject of the set, haha What is Rupert’s game room like, everyone says it’s really awesome!? Have you actually seen Emma beat Dan and Rupert at ping-pong? Have you ever played against her?
Matt: Rupert’s got a pretty good room. Table tennis, darts, pool.
Megan: that would be so fun!
Matt: It’s definitely the place to be if you’re bored or you wanna wind down
Megan: haha yea i’d imagine”
Matt: But saying that though, Dan and Rupert are always a good laugh and we like the same music and comedy”

Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. In all, Josiah would father 17 children.

Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer. After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell their products in the streets.

When Benjamin was 15 his brother started The New England Courant the first "newspaper" in Boston. Though there were two papers in the city before James's Courant, they only reprinted news from abroad. James's paper carried articles, opinion pieces written by James's friends, advertisements, and news of ship schedules.

Franklin as printer
Benjamin wanted to write for the paper too, but he knew that James would never let him. After all, Benjamin was just a lowly apprentice. So Ben began writing letters at night and signing them with the name of a fictional widow, Silence Dogood. Dogood was filled with advice and very critical of the world around her, particularly concerning the issue of how women were treated. Ben would sneak the letters under the print shop door at night so no one knew who was writing the pieces. They were a smash hit, and everyone wanted to know who was the real "Silence Dogood."

After 16 letters, Ben confessed that he had been writing the letters all along. While James's friends thought Ben was quite precocious and funny, James scolded his brother and was very jealous of the attention paid to him.

Before long the Franklins found themselves at odds with Boston's powerful Puritan preachers, the Mathers. Smallpox was a deadly disease in those times, and the Mathers supported inoculation; the Franklins' believed inoculation only made people sicker. And while most Bostonians agreed with the Franklins, they did not like the way James made fun of the clergy, during the debate. Ultimately, James was thrown in jail for his views, and Benjamin was left to run the paper for several issues.

Upon release from jail, James was not grateful to Ben for keeping the paper going. Instead he kept harassing his younger brother and administering beatings from time to time. Ben could not take it and decided to run away in 1723.

Escape to Philadelphia

Philadelphia
Running away was illegal. In early America, people all had to have a place in society and runaways did not fit in anywhere. Regardless Ben took a boat to New York where he hoped to find work as a printer. He didn't, and walked across New Jersey, finally arriving in Philadelphia via a boat ride. After debarking, he used the last of his money to buy some rolls. He was wet, disheveled, and messy when his future wife, Deborah Read, saw him on that day, October, 6, 1723. She thought him odd-looking, never dreaming that seven years later they would be married.

Franklin found work as an apprentice printer. He did so well that the governor of Pennsylvania promised to set him up in business for himself if young Franklin would just go to London to buy fonts and printing equipment. Franklin did go to London, but the governor reneged on his promise and Benjamin was forced to spend several months in England doing print work.

Benjamin had been living with the Read family before he left for London. Deborah Read, the very same girl who had seen young Benjamin arrive in Philadelphia, started talking marriage, with the young printer. But Ben did not think he was ready. While he was gone, she married another man.

Upon returning to Philadelphia, Franklin tried his hand at helping to run a shop, but soon went back to being a printer's helper. Franklin was a better printer than the man he was working for, so he borrowed some money and set himself up in the printing business. Franklin seemed to work all the time, and the citizens of Philadelphia began to notice the diligent young businessman. Soon he began getting the contract to do government jobs and started thriving in business.

In 1728, Benjamin fathered a child named William. The mother of William is not known. However, in 1730 Benjamin married his childhood sweetheart, Deborah Read. Deborah's husband had run off, and now she was able to marry.

In addition to running a print shop, the Franklins also ran their own store at this time, with Deborah selling everything from soap to fabric. Ben also ran a book store. They were quite enterprising.

The Pennsylvania Gazette

Join or Die
In 1729, Benjamin Franklin bought a newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin not only printed the paper, but often contributed pieces to the paper under aliases. His newspaper soon became the most successful in the colonies. This newspaper, among other firsts, would print the first political cartoon, authored by Ben himself.

During the 1720s and 1730s, the side of Franklin devoted to public good started to show itself. He organized the Junto, a young working-man's group dedicated to self- and-civic improvement. He joined the Masons. He was a very busy man socially.

The statistics of Barbra Streisand’s achievements as a recording sales leader are clearly drawn in platinum and gold. She has achieved sales unequaled by any other female recording artist. With fifty-one gold albums, she is second in the all-time charts, ahead of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, exceeded only by Elvis. Thus, she is the only artist among the top four all-time gold record sellers who was not part of the rock & roll revolution which has dominated the record business for four decades. Her 51 gold and thirty platinum albums, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, exceed all other female singers. In fact, it exceeds any recording artist or act other than Elvis Presley.

The RIAA also noted that with 71 million albums sold she is the only female artists to have achieved thirteen multi-platinum albums (including the soundtrack for her motion picture "A Star Is Born.") Her recordings have earned her eight Grammy Awards and Grammy's Lifetime Achievement and Legend Awards in the process. She has had number one albums in each of the last five decades, a record not even approached by any individual or group. Her number one albums span a period of nearly 45 years, also the greatest longevity in that statistic for any recording entity in any category of music. A millennium poll by the Reuters news agency identified her as the favorite female singer of the 20th Century and Frank Sinatra as the favorite male singer.

Her most recent Columbia Records album “Love Is The Answer,” with its debut in the #1 position on the charts, established her having had number one albums in five consecutive decades, became her ninth #1 album. Her prior release, “Streisand – Live In Concert 2006,” opened its sales as #7 on the Billboard Top 200 best-selling albums chart, a rare achievement for a double album. “Love Is The Answer” became the 8th Barbra Streisand album to debut in the Top 10. With a total of 30 Top 10 albums to her credit since 1963, Ms. Streisand has the widest span (46 years) between first and latest Top 10 albums of any female recording artists or act and she holds the record for most Top 10 albums by female performers. Her first solo album, “The Barbra Streisand Album,” reached #8 in 1963, while her follow-up, “The Second Barbra Streisand Album” achieved #2 the same year.

Her "A Love Like Ours" (1999), the double album, "Timeless - Live In Concert" (2000) and "The Movie Album" (2003) were all quickly certified as gold and then platinum. Her prior "Higher Ground" (1997) and earlier "Back To Broadway" (1993) albums are among only a handful of recordings ever to become Number One on the sales charts in their initial week of release (Ms. Streisand now has three) and to go platinum through their first shipping orders. The previous "The Broadway Album" (1985) similarly enjoyed great praise and sales, became #1 and brought her three Grammy nominations and her eighth Grammy for Best Pop Female Vocalist. The double-album "Barbra Streisand: The Concert" (1994) was another recent effort in her parade of hits. "Higher Ground" occasioned two additional Grammy nominations. "Timeless: Live In Concert" (2000), "Christmas Memories" (2001) and "The Movie Album" (2003), all earned a nomination too. At home in pop, show tunes, rock and ballads, she even made a classical album titled "Classical Barbra" (1976) which was nominated for a Grammy Award in the classical division. Of all her releases, 1980's "Guilty," Barbra's collaboration with Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees, achieved the greatest success worldwide, selling over 20 million units and spawning several smash hit singles. The pair teamed up again, 25 years later, to create "Guilty Pleasures". The album was certified Gold -- a month later.

Another of Ms. Streisand's recent albums, “Guilty Pleasures,” quickly became her 50th gold. Among other notable recent albums, "Christmas Memories," released in October 2001, was her first full-length studio album since 1999's "A Love Like Ours.” "Christmas Memories" was Streisand's first seasonal collection since "A Christmas Album," which has been certified quintuple- platinum by the RIAA and has re-entered the charts each year since its 1967 release. An album of inspirational music for all seasons, "Christmas Memories" was "lovingly dedicated" to Stephan Weiss, the husband of designer Donna Karan and a close friend of Streisand's, who passed away in June 2001. Her recent 3 disc video set, “Streisand The Concerts” became her eighth gold DVD or video and fifth platinum within two months after being number one in sales for three weeks. On September 26, 2009 she returned to the site of her start as a singer, Greenwich Village, for a performance at the Village Vanguard for an audience of lucky fans selected at random. The event preceded the release of her 63rd album, “Love Is The Answer.”

Which biographies and autobiographies have sold the most since 2001? Which have sold the fastest?

They may now be the least popular type of book, but as recently as 2005, sales of autobiographies were not doing so badly. Last year, autobiographies made up just 0.58% of all book sales, while 'romance and sagas', accounted for 11.26%, due partly to the huge success of EL James' Fifty Shades of Grey.

Nielsen BookScan collected the data directly from over 35,500 bookshops' point of sale systems on a weekly basis. That does mean however that sales of e-books are not included in the data, and second-hand book sales are likely to be under-estimated.

The best-selling autobiography since 2001 is 'A Child Called It' by Dave Pelzer, shifting over a million copies and generating over £5.5 million in revenue. Peter Kay's autobiography 'The Sound of Laughter' tops the chart in terms of revenue at £9.3 million. Comedians figure prominently on the list with Paul O'Grady, Dawn French, Russell Brand, Michael McIntyre and Frank Skinner all making it to the top 50.

When the publication date is taken into account, the list looks very different. Steve Jobs biography, though the most expensive on the list at RRP £25, sold on average 535 copies a day since it was published in October 2011, making it the fastest selling book on the biography list. That still appears a weak performance when compared to Cheryl Cole's autobiography 'Cheryl: My Story' which has sold on average 2,308 copies a day since it was released in October last year.

Each of the titles in the top biographies since 2001 sold on average 223,000 copies. For the authors in the top 50 autobiographies, the average number of copies sold was 410,000. The average RRP of the best-selling biographies was £11.01, and £13.61 for a top 50 autobiography though the average selling price for both was consistently lower than the RRP.

Though arts autobiographies have fallen from selling 2.1 million in 2005 to just 649,000 in 2012, this remains the most popular subject. Sales of historical, political and military autobiographies have also fallen considerably during this time.

Autobiographies from royalty, which had been on a downward trend since 2003, almost doubled between 2008 and 2009. Biographies written by religious and spiritual figures about their own lives continue to be the weakest category, representing just 1% of all sales.

• 'Dreams from My Father:A Story of Race and Inheritance' by President Barack Obama is number 4 on the bestseller list, selling 784,000 copies.
• At £25 and the most expensive autobiography on the list, Tony Blair's 'A Journey' ranks 42nd.
• In 11th place in the biography chart, it's not possible to say how many of the 332,000 sales of "Feel:Robbie Williams" were due to excited fans misreading the title.

A New York Times bestseller: A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at life on Pennsylvania Avenue with America’s first families, by the man who spent nearly three decades in their midst

J. B. West, chief usher of the White House, directed the operations and maintenance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—and coordinated its daily life—at the request of the president and his family. He directed state functions; planned parties, weddings and funerals, gardens and playgrounds, and extensive renovations; and with a large staff, supervised every activity in the presidential home. For twenty-eight years, first as assistant to the chief usher, then as chief usher, he witnessed national crises and triumphs, and interacted daily with six consecutive presidents and first ladies, their parents, children and grandchildren, and houseguests—including friends, relatives, and heads of state.
J. B. West (1912–1983), chief usher of the White House—or executive director of the executive mansion and grounds—was once called “the most powerful man in Washington next to the president.” Discreet and witty, he supervised the large permanent staff that provided for every personal want and need for six presidents and first ladies, including at state dinners, weddings, and funerals, redecorating the facilities for each family and tending to every special request. He served first as assistant to the chief usher and then as chief usher after retiring as a high-level civilian officer of the US Navy. A native Iowan, his White House tenure (1941–1969) followed a career in the Veterans Administration. Upstairs at the White House was published in 1973 and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for months, with more than five hundred extraordinarily positive reviews, editions in seven languages, and more than two million copies sold in the US across hardcover and paperback formats.

Mary Lynn Kotz, the author of four books, is a freelance magazine journalist based in Washington, DC. A contributing editor of ARTnews, she has written many cover stories, including “A Day with Georgia O’Keeffe.” Her book Rauschenberg: Art and Life is the biography of the late American artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008), about whom she has given illustrated lectures at more than seventy museums and festivals, including at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
