Evolving from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, modern Halloween has become less about literal ghosts and ghouls and more about costumes and candy. The Celts used the day to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, and also believed that this transition between the seasons was a bridge to the world of the dead.  Over the millennia the holiday transitioned from a somber pagan ritual to a day of merriment, costumes, parades and sweet treats for children and adults.

This is a fun one! I enjoyed Bunting's rhymes, the excellent cast of Halloween-y characters parading by, and the "surprise" ending.

I would never have guessed that Jan Brett is the illustrator!!! This is such a far cry from her current style and I really didn't find anything remarkable or distinctive about the illustrations but the story is still a fun one.
I was reading this book for the Goodreads Children’s Book Club and it was an alright read. “Scary, Scary Halloween” is a Halloween children’s book by Eve Bunting along with illustrations by Jan Brett and it details the true spirit of Halloween as children are seen dressed up in different Halloween creatures while a pair of green eyes watch their every move. “Scary, Scary Halloween” might have beautiful illustrations, but the story is a bit too average for some children.
I loved the illustrations on the inside front/back covers. They whetted my appetite for the book. Then, things got a little bit scary, as the title warned. Not really, but I’d have been temporarily tense if I’d had this read to me as a small child. I think it’s just scary enough, and just cute enough, not too much of either.
Another Eve Bunting book we adored! This one has a Halloween poem that talks about all the creatures of the night and has you guessing who the narrator is. The illustrations were creepy and colorful, and both my 5 yr old and my twin 3 yr olds loved the book. Rhyming prose in our household is always a favorite, especially ones that are fun to read. My 5 yr old insisted on reading every other line with me, while one of the twins happily repeated most of the lines I was saying. Lots of fun and perfect for a cozy autumn read.

I loved the first page of this story with two green eyes peering out of the darkness and the line, "I peer outside, there's something there. That makes me shiver, spikes my hair. It must be Halloween." It really captures the mood of Halloween. The next pages of text and illustrations highlight the creepy creatures we might see at Halloween. My son enjoyed the pages that had the green eyes peeking out the most and just loved the ending but I think he would have loved to see more of them and less of the creatures passing by.
A fun book about Halloween. When I saw that the book was a collaboration between Eve Bunting and Jan Brett, I just had to take a peek. Certainly not our favorite story, but Jan Brett's illustrations never disappoint.
2.5 stars. Jan Brett toned down her usual complex illustrative style a lot for this. The "surprise" at the end is ok. I don't think I'd buy this one for my classroom library, sorry. Not bad, just not as good as it might have been.
Four pairs of eyes stare from the blackness to watch fearsome creatures trick-or-treat. "Carefully planned and executed, illustrations & text nicely unified, this is well designed for group use & a fine introduction to Halloween story programs." -School Library Journal (Goodreads Summary)

Scary, Scary Halloween is an effective collaboration between Bunting & Brett. The style of illustration is different from Jan Brett's usual style but works well to make this suspenseful but not too scary for most listeners. (Sensitive young ones may be scared, particularly by the devil costume.) The sets of eyes at the beginning with an unknown narrator draw one into the story.

Very perceptive readers may realize that the skeleton is wearing shoes, and could realize that it's a costume, but most children won't pick up that detail. I love the illustrations of the cats in the final pages, especially the one with mother playing with a bat on a string while a mouse dashes off with a piece of candy corn! Some of the text is poetically spooky, my favorite being "Cover eye and cover ear, nightmares walk the streets of fear, on dreaded Halloween." For ages 4 to first grades and admirers of Bunting and Brett.
This book is about Halloween night told from the perspective of unknown eyes peering out from underneath a creepy porch. It describes all of the scary creatures that are outside on this night. There is a skeleton, ghost, witches, werewolves, and more out wondering around on "dreaded Halloween." The mummy walks on the porch above the mysterious eyes. When the mummy leaves it is revealed to the reader that it is just a little boy trick or treating. When he is gone the eyes run out from the porch and ends up being a cat and it's kittens. This is a great story to read aloud around Halloween to children in kindergarten to around grade two. It engages students and allows them to make predictions about what is coming next, who the monsters really are, and what who the eyes under the porch belong to. It is also just very entertaining to read. I also liked this story because it shows that Halloween is not really scary, it is all make believe. The illustrations are what i liked best about this book. Jan Brett did a great job making each page creepy, but still colorful and very entertaining to look at. It made the cat's descriptions of what they saw going on come to life for the reader.
